ABOUT BURNS BLOSSOM FARM:

BURNS BLOSSOM FARM is certified organic by the REAL ORGANIC PROJECT, C.C.O.F. & U.S.D.A. Owned and operated by Mel & Kyle Forrest Burns, with a combined 23 years of market farming experience under their belts. Our diversified farm enterprise spans two distinct locations less than 2 miles apart. We are driven by our passion for farming, food, and family. Our work is guided by a commitment to cultivating a highly diverse, regenerative, and thriving farm that nourishes both the land and our community. We strive to create a farm culture rooted in purpose by the joy of growing and sharing good food. Our goal is to be a beacon of resilient, responsible farming where hard work, respect for the land, and a love for great food come together.

BURNS BLOSSOM FARM HAS TWO LOCATIONS.

THE BARBER MARKET FARM

Our Barber Market Farm is nestled in the cute Barber neighborhood, a mere stone's throw from Downtown Chico and the expansive Bidwell Park. This farm is dedicated to intensive vegetable production resulting in an immense amount of produce grown year-round, with a focus on diverse market vegetables with 3/4 acre of production and six caterpillar tunnels.

This farm serves as a centralized location for events, diversified production, and a beacon to what is possible on a small footprint.

THE HOME FARM

In addition, our second location, the Home Farm, was purchased in September of 2023 and lies just beyond city limits, maintaining a close proximity to CSU Chico campus. This larger farm affords us the opportunity to cultivate certain crops at scale, with a special focus on garlic, berries, cut-flowers and heirloom tomatoes. It is less than 2 miles from the Barber Farm.

This farm serves as a dynamic space for experimentation, where we delve into innovative practices like grown-in-situ mulch, cover cropping, occultation, and the ongoing refinement of our no-till methods on 4 acres of land.

Our Approach to Farming

At Burns Blossom Farm, we see ourselves as more than just farmers. We have a deep commitment to organic, regenerative agriculture that nourishes both people and the planet. Our human-scale approach prioritizes soil health, biodiversity, and community connection, ensuring a farm that is both productive and sustainable.

We rely primarily on manual, low-impact farming methods, using hand tools to cultivate our fields while minimizing soil compaction. While we incorporate a BCS walk-behind for flail mowing and power harrowing and a four-wheel tractor at our larger farm, our focus remains on building healthy soil that enhance long-term fertility and resilience.

A Regenerative Farm for a Resilient Future

Our diverse crop production includes annual vegetables, perennial berries, herbs, and cut-flowers, all grown using methods that:
Improve organic, regenerative agriculture
Care for natural resources by enhancing biodiversity and improving soil health
Reduce the use of non-renewable resources through low-input, soil building cover crops
Mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon in healthy, living soil
Help build a more equitable and diverse local food system
Offer fresh, healthy food to our neighbors, strengthening our community

Bringing Our Harvest to the Community

In 2025, our highly diversified crop selections will be available through farmers markets, schools, food hubs, food banks, restaurants, and natural food stores, ensuring that more people have access to fresh, nutrient-dense, locally grown food. While we are a business, farming for us is about more than just production, it’s about connection, sustainability, and equity. We secured a CDFA farm-to-school grant in 2025 to help us build the infrastructure we need for climate resilience, scaling up and offers us the ability to connect with the next generation.

A Commitment to Growth & Learning

Now entering our fourth season as Burns Blossom Farm and our tenth season farming together, we are dedicated to continuous learning, experimentation, and adaptation. We actively test new techniques, refine our systems, and embrace innovation to build a resilient farm for our employees and neighbors. At the same time, we believe in sharing our knowledge, experiences, successes, and challenges with our community. A thriving local food system depends on collaboration, transparency, and shared growth.
