ABOUT BURNS BLOSSOM FARM:

BURNS BLOSSOM FARM is certified by the REAL ORGANIC PROJECT and C.C.O.F. & U.S.D.A. Owned and operated by Mel & Kyle Forrest Burns, formerly of Nye Ranch Farm, our diversified market farm spans two distinct locations just 2 miles apart. We take pride in growing quality crops, from seed to community.

Our urban farm is nestled in the cute Barber neighborhood, a mere stone's throw from Downtown Chico and the expansive Bidwell Park. This farm is dedicated to intense vegetable production resulting in an immense amount of produce grown year-round, with a focus on diverse market vegetables on 3/4 acre of land.

In addition, our second location we purchased in September of 2023 lies just beyond city limits, maintaining a close proximity to CSU Chico campus. This larger farm affords us the opportunity to cultivate certain crops at scale, with a special focus on garlic, berries and tomatoes. It serves as a dynamic space for experimentation, where we delve into innovative practices like grown in situ mulch, cover cropping, occultation, and the ongoing refinement of our no-till methods on 4 acres of land.

Barber Neighborhood Urban Farm, a stones throw from Downtown Chico and 2 miles from our other location.

At Burns Blossom Farms, we pride ourselves on practicing human-scale farming, relying primarily on hand tools to cultivate our fields. While we employ a BCS walk-behind for flail mowing and power harrowing, as well as a four-wheel tractor for moving compost, our commitment to manual methods ensures highly productive soil on our farms. Our diverse crops includes annual vegetables, berries, herbs, and cut-flowers.

In the upcoming year of 2024, our bountiful crops will be available through various channels, including farmers markets, a CSA farm box, restaurants, and natural food stores. Farming is not just a profession for us; it's a passion that extends to sharing and caring, qualities we take pride in excelling at.

Our farming practices are rooted in a commitment to healthy soils teeming with active biology. We focus on maximizing photosynthesis, enhancing soil organic matter, sequestering carbon, and actively engaging with the local community. Embracing regenerative farming techniques such as cover crops, mulching, intercropping, ramial wood-chip pathways, no-till, and low-till practices, along with the creation of pollinator hedgerows, we strive to create a harmonious and beautiful ecosystem. Our dedication to soil health is evident in our continuous trials and experimentation with innovative techniques. We utilize a 9 hoophouses and they are maintained year-round.

Entering our third season as Burns Blossom Farms and our ninth season farming together, we maintain a spirit of continuous learning. While we continually strive to expand our knowledge, we also embrace the opportunity to share both our successes and failures with the communities that supports us.
